Two of our Sixth Form RE students, Amelia C and Rebecca H, have taken part in the ‘Lessons from Auschwitz’ project as part of their studies.

Accompanied by Miss Wilkinson, the students travelled to Poland for one day and visited the town of Oswiecim, which was 70% Jewish inhabited before the Second World War. They then went on to visit Auschwitz I, which has been made into a museum; there they saw hair, clothing, glasses, shoes and suitcases taken from those brought to the camp, and walked through one of the remaining gas chambers located just beyond the perimeter fence.

Students then went to Auschwitz-Birkenau where they were able to see the living conditions of the prisoners and reflect upon the atrocities at the memorial. They also took part in a candle-lit ceremony with a Rabbi to remember all those that had lost their lives. It is truly tragic to consider that if we had a minute silence for each person that lost their life in these camps, we would have to remain silent for two years.
